BOEING 747 400 engines starting procedure, HOWEVER ..something is not...

I recently discovered that the Hong Kong Aviation forum features a Technical Quiz based on the Cathay Pacific (CX) S/O (second Officer) exam until recently freely available on the Web. Below is question 1 with the correct example and my attempt at a fuller explanation.

Question 1

What is the meaning of a status message?
A. Indicates an equipment fault.
B. Indicates a low level emergency.
C. Indicates a mid-level emergency.
D. None of the above.

Answer is a

Why?

Page 228 of the original Precision Manual 744 Operations Manual states “STATUS MESSAGES”- “(white) indicates conditions which require minimum equipment list (MEL) reference for dispatch

From a legal Boeing  747 Flight Crew Operations Manual on page 1148 it states

Status Messages

“Status messages indicate equipment faults requiring MEL reference for dispatch”

Here is the correct answer from a contributor called dingerbell 100 "his aircraft is not fitted with AUTOSTART, hence the Manual Start Procedure. Secondly, the Lower EICAS Display is INOP; it has a yellow MEL sticker as seen on several recent videos."

it took me a couple of viewings to notice the engine is on the upper display of EICAS on the First Officers side. See if you can locate it? We want the engines running perfectly before we start to taxi or do a takeoff roll after all.

Now go & try it out on Aerowinx. if you have any questions please don`t hesitate to contact me through the blog.

Till next time from a sunny Sydney,

Neil
